With reference to the letter from this Department
10749 of the 25th instant regarding the appointment of a
Chinese consulting engineer for the Chinese section
of the Canton-Kowloon Railway, I am directed by Se-
cretary Sir Edward Grey to state, for the information
of the Secretary of State for the Colonies, that a
telegram has now been received from His Majesty's
Chargé d'Affaires at Peking stating that proposals
which the Board of Communications have lately
made
with regard to the work of a consulting engineer have
been communicated to the engineer-in-chief of the
Chinese section by Mr. Bland, the agent of the British
and Chinese Corporation. This gentleman is of opin-
ion that the reply of the engineer-in-chief should be
awaited before any further steps are taken.

In these circumstances Sir E. Grey would propose,
with the concurrence of the Earl of Elgin, to await
the reply.
